Long hair is not exclusively the domain of philosophers. Remember, plenty of musicians, surfers, and everyday people enjoy having their hair long....and a good portion of today's philosophers also enjoy keeping their hair short.

From my own interactions with the long-haired set (which I used to be a part of), I'd say it comes down to one of two things...

**The person just can't be bothered to think of such a mundane thing as getting his or her hair cut. This is the type of person whose mind is off in the clouds, trying to sort out the mysteries of the universe, and haircuts (and sometimes even remembering to eat) are just too everyday to get much notice.

**The person likes the look of longer hair, and as such has decided to cultivate it for themselves.

It's not something that people in this particular profession cultivate, and it's more of a personal choice (just as shaving my head is for me these days) than anything.

It is that they are just so busy thinking about the higher things in life, they do not have time to get their hair cut.
I guess they consider it natural. Like not having to take a bath or change their clothes.
Plus, they want to be different, stick out, and make people notice them.
Just as you are now doing by asking the question
