Did you slowly acclimate them to your water and temperature by adding a half cup of your tank water to their bag every 15 minutes for two hours? If you didn't do this, then they are probably suffering from pH shock.

If your tank water is more than .5 pH different than what they have been living in, it is enough to send them into shock and probably kill them. A 4 degree temp difference is not enough to kill, but if you didn't slowly acclimate, it just adds to the stress and the shock value of the different pH.

I would take them immediately back to the fish store and get some of the water that they were in at the store to put in their bag. It must be done slowly too. I'm surprised the fish store people didn't tell you how to do this.

Another possibility is that you haven't done any water changes on your tank in a long time and the ammonia is through the roof. Your fish have slowly gotten used to the stress and ammonia burning their gills and bodies but the new fish are subjected to it all at once and it will surely kill them.

That said, don't do a 100% water change to give fresh water, that would kill your old fish because of the immediate change.

Email me if you have more questions, I would be glad to help.

How big is the tank? How many fish? Do you test the water?
