Gossiping is like putting other people down, inasmuch as you do not usually gossip about happy or good things. In doing so, it is like stepping on others in order to elevate yourself.
Actually, until you learn better, gossiping will only lower you in others' eyes.

Gossip can fulfill many different needs. It can make a person feel superior in knowledge of other people's business. It can make them feel superior to the negaive circumstance of their subject. It is designed to gain attention for the self even as it seems to divert attention to another. It evokes emotion and drama and resulting physiological sensations that some people enjoy. It is a mechanism for gaining intimacy with someone by sharing this information in a conspiratorial tone. I have done it, but understanding it makes it a much less desirable pastime these days.

Arther? Do you mean "other"?

Whatever, I do not gossip, and will not listen to others do so. I hate to hear people talking about others behind their backs--it is cruel. If someone starts talking to me about someone else in a negative way, I nod, then walk away.

When someone gossips to me about someonen else, I tell them i don't want to hear it. Or, even better, I ask them "so, what do you say about me when I am not around?"
