I am trying to break my 2 and a half daughter of her thumb sucking, she does it when shes tired. Currently there have been a lot of changes in her life I just went back to work, she goes to the babysitters over night etc.. I dont want to use nasty hot sauce or things like that to break her of it but it needs to stop, im sure it is a way to deal with the changes in her life but it really needs to stop. I have thought about trying to replace her thumb with a binki and then eventually in a few months taking that away but idk....

i would like some ideas on how to do this... im not asking for people to tell me to leave it alone cause i really dont want to hear it so if thats your opinion please dont even bother answering this.
just some simple sugestions would be sooo much aprecieated. her speach is perfect for her age but her teeth are crooked. regaurdless this needs to stop and I need some opinions.... Thanks to everyone in advance

It may just have to be stopped on it's on time, my 2 yr old son sucks on his thumb still, he had a pacifier until 3 mths & he would no longer have anything to do with it. I myself do not want to do the hot sauce thing either. He even has his favorite blanket & holds it in one hand & sucks his thumb with the other, He also does the thumb sucking when tired, restless, or even watching tv. I know a mother who kept trying to break her daughter from thumb sucking & the Dr told her to let her be because that was her "comfort zone" so to speak. If you want to know any ideas to get her to stop ASAP then call your childs Dr & talk with him or even check in with your pharmacist they may can help you find something that is safe to break thumb sucking. GOOD LUCK!

Honestly, I don't see anything wrong with thumb-sucking at this age. It's just something that comforts them..and when they don't need that comfort anymore they will quit sucking their thumbs.

However, if you feel it's a problem then here's what I suggest:

Try "replacing" her thumb (so to speak!). You could replace it with a binky, but be aware you'll have to break her of that later on as well. I'm not convinced at all that binkies/thumb sucking cause speech problems or crooked teeth. I know kids who did both until they were 3 or 4 and spoke clearly from the day they started talking and have a beautiful set of teeth.

If you're not for introducing the binky, try giving her something else that can be comforting. I would suggest a blanket or a stuffed animal. Having a "special blankie" or a "special friend" with her will be just as comforting as sucking her thumb.

My old boss sucked her thumb. She sucked her left one while she was writing and her right one the rest of the time - she's 30+ and has very similar shaped teeth as Josie! One of my granddaughters only stopped when she was 16 !

I say you should go with the hot sauce.
