It depends on a lot of things. Sometimes, as Magicman1 said, it might be genes. Usually the ones known as "marbles" will change from one color to the other (they are 2 usually-opposite colors). If your betta is purebred, it won't change colors unless the water gets too cold or it gets sick or old. The bettas you get from most aquarium stores, Walmart, etc. are mutts so you can't tell what color they are supposed to be, and since in the store they are usually kept in less-then-optimal conditions, once you get them home and into a good tanks with a lot of clean water, heat, good regular food, they will change from their store colors to what color they were supposed to be.

Not to be a spoiler, but it's not really normal... not to say it doesn't happen, but it's not normal either.

You must have had a blue betta with underlying red genetics and as it aged the blue faded. That's not a typical situation, but betta genetics are really strange so it can happen.

A beta constantly changes colours during seasons, almost like the leaves on the tree. Its a mating thing, they change "red" because it attracts the female, females are smaller then the male beta, All betas that has fan-like fins are male.
i hope this helps

Yes, it is normal. The older a Beta gets, they will change in color. Males mainly. . .female Betas tend to stay pretty much the same color as they were were young. I have male Betas and they all have changed colors from their fins to shades on their bodies.
