For real dating, not "playground romances", it really depends on how mature the child is... but I would say the last years of middle school.
I don't say an age because adolescents mature with the rest of their class. When they see classmates dressing or acting a certain way, they will most likely attempt to imitate. So if they are 15 but still in 7th grade, or if they are 12 but in 8th, being allowed or not allowed to do something that the people around them are or aren't isn't very purposeful.

i think it has a lot to do with what your child's idea of dating is. if it is a more shallow (sorry for the blunt term) relationship where they just want a partner to tell them they look pretty and that they like them a lot... a relationship that is a bit more than just friendship... then 12 sounds reasonable. if the idea is something more serious then i'm thinking 16 is the absolute earliest.
remember that your kid (i am assuming you are the parent here since you used the word "child"...) has emotional needs too. it doesn't need to get too serious for their emotional needs to be met. i am not saying that a shallow relationship is bad, on the contrary it is good because then he/she is taking it little by little. if you suddenly allow him/her to go full on in a deep or serious relationship right away then it is a larger load for him/her to handle. I say let your kid have the liberty, just don't let them stray too far.

Well for one thing, a "child" should not even be thinking about dating. It's really depends on the maturity of the "teenager" or even "adult". I personally would not let my Daughter date anyone until she was ready to look for marriage mate and was beyond the bloom of youth, meaning past the time her hormones are raging...21 or over perhaps.
But that's just me. If you are looking for a practical age I would say 18 or over.

It depends on the child. The real question is, is the child ready to date?

depends when you think you are mature enough.
but the best age is 13 or 14. and if your parents get in the way then maybe you should wait till you get older or try to tell them that you are growing up and you need to be a teenager and live your life.

I think 15 is a good age to start, but it really should depend on the maturity level.
