Did they work at one time? What happened to make them stop working? If you moved something around, then look for a bad connection. If you did something with cables, check to see they are plugged in where they should be. Check the volume controls on the speakers if they are external, and make sure they are plugged in to a live outlet.
If the problem is in software, go to START>Control Panel and double click "Sounds and Audio Devices". If "Mute" is checked, un-check it. Move the volume slider to the right. Under "Device Volume" click "Advanced", move sliders up, un-click any "Mute" boxes. Under "Speaker Settings", click "Advanced" and move sliders to the right. Now try again. If still no sound something happened to the sound driver software - re-install it.

first of all make sure the speakers aren't muted by right clicking the speaker on task bar and choosing open volume control
If the volume is up all the way and is not muted then download the drivers from the sound card manufacturer
