It is the land of the dead. There are 'happy' sections, like heaven (think a field of flowers, always in bloom, next to a beautiful clear stream under endless skies of blue),and there are sections where the 'rough and tough' would go. If you have ever seen the movie Night-breed, this latter is very like the underground Cabal. (Very brimstone)
Hades is guarded by a three headed hell-hound. There are singing sisters that lead you from the peaceful to the not-so-peaceful levels.
When you die, you must cross the river to get to Hades. This underground river CANNOT be crossed except by this special boat, and you have to pay the toll. This is where we get the 'coins on the eyes of the dead'. This is to pay the toll across the river.
If you like the movie Hercules, or even Zena, both of these had fairly accurate, if Hollywoodized, versions of the Greek Mythos. I would start my search there.

Hades was the god of the dead and ruler of the underworld. He was the son of Cronus and Rhea and brother of Zeus and Poseidon. After he and his brothers overthrew the Titans, Poseidon received the sea,Hades received the underworld, and Zues took the upperworld.Hades wife was Persephone whom he took from the upperworld.Persephone had to spend a third of the year with her unwanted husband,Hades. The rest of the year was with her mother,Demeter. Hades was not liked by any gods or mortals. He was non forgiving to any prayer or sacrifice. Hades would never tease, or torment the dead, he simply did his job. Mortals would refuse to mention the name of Hades, for they feared they might attract him, and then Hades would call for them. Although, Hades was not evil. Hades, also known as Pluto to the Romans, was also refereed to as Rich One.

Well,as for his features little is known about how ancient greeks pictured him...Not many statues or descriptions of him have been found.Probably because he was not liked very much ...
Here are some images(statues and paintings)of his,though:

The Greek underworld is named after Hades the Greek God of the Underworld and brother to Zeus. Hades is divided into many separate regions:

1. The Plain of Judgement
Some say that the soul receives judgement in the meadow (the Plain of Judgement) at the dividing of the road, whence are the two ways leading, one to the Isles of the Blest (or Elysium), and the other to Tartarus.

2. Tartarus
Tartarus is the lowest region of the world, as far below earth as earth is from heaven. According to the Greek poet Hesiod, a bronze anvil falling from heaven would take nine days and nights to reach earth, and an object would take the same amount of time to fall from earth into Tartarus. Tartarus is described as a dank, gloomy pit, surrounded by a wall of bronze, and beyond that a three-fold layer of night. Along with Chaos, Earth, and Eros, it is one of the first entities to exist in the universe.
While Hades is the main realm of the dead in Greek mythology, Tartarus also contains a number of characters. In early stories, it is primarily the prison for defeated gods; the Titans were condemned to Tartarus after losing their battle against the Olympian gods, and the hecatoncheires stood over them as guards at the bronze gates. When Zeus overcomes the monster Typhus, born from Tartarus and Gaia, he hurls it too into the same abyss.
However, in later myths Tartarus becomes a place of punishment for sinners. It resembles Hell and is the opposite of Elysium, the afterlife for the blessed. When the hero Aeneas visits the underworld, he looks into Tartarus and sees the torments inflicted on characters such as the Titans, Tityos, Otus and Ephialtes, and the Lapiths. Rhadymanthus (and, in some versions, his brother Minos) judges the dead and assigns punishment.

3. Elysium (Elysian Fields)
A beautiful meadow where the favored of Zeus enjoy perfect happiness. By the time of Vergil, the Elysian Fields had been located in the Underworld as the home of the dead who were judged worthy. In the Aeneid, those blessed dead compose poetry, sing, dance, and tend to their chariots. Aeneas talks to Anchises in the Elysian Fields in Book VI of the Aeneid.
