I run a website with a developing forum and was wondering if anyone would help me build my community.

Thta could be where you're losing out KJS ... asking people to sign up. Many people don't like to be 'tied in' to things. Why is there a need for people to sign up? Couldn't you allow open usage?
You may get people to sign up, but how many will stay?
