The Confederate States of America. You may have noticed that the Confederate Battle Flag has 13 stars. Unknown to most, there were 13 Confederate States. There were 11 states that seceded, plus Kentucky and Missouri that supplied troops and support. SCV....

The answer of course is Confederate States of America but your question has led me to do some research about the subject that I have been curious about for a long time. That is how the term confederacy came into use and how is applies to the south in 1861. I've often wonder if it means anti-Federalist? I have found the answer and will share it with you for whatever it's worth.

Confederation vs. federation
The difference in meaning between a confederation and a federation had evolved in usage over time. Prior to the US Civil War, the terms were largely synonymous, but differing political views with regard to the nature of political unions, especially as applied to the US Constitution (which up to that time was considered both a Federal and a Confederated Union), caused each of the terms to subsequently embody one of the two rival and opposing theories of state's rights. The term "Federation" came to be associated with the ideology of indestructible union, with a national character, composed of indestructible states, and supremacy of the central government, to which member states permanently and perpetually cede a portion of their sovereignty; the term "Confederacy" came to be associated with the ideology of dissolvable union, composed of completely sovereign nation-states, with final authority and supremacy residing in the state governments rather than the central one

Confederate States of America. (It's what the seceding states became when they left the USA. The more I learn about this part of America's history, the more I wish the USA would have just let them go, and not fought. The only good thing to come out of it was the end of slavery.)
