i know why they put candles!!it comes from ancient greece and they were called moon cakes-which had candles on them!!!to celebrate the moon god!!but sorry don't know about the blowing out part!!!

I always thought it was so your wish would come true. Google says the candle part originated in Greece, because the flames resembled the glow from a full moon.

if you don't blow the candles out you can't make a wish.
it lights the cake up in the dark too, if you left the candles burning you couldn't eat the cake ouch!!! symbolizes another year older and stronger lungs, and smarter (no burnt tongue this year).

I have this feeling that it's because candles represent life.
The less candles you have the easier it is to put out, you're more venerable. Every year, it adds on, making it harder to put the flame out. You also know that one day, our candle will be extinguished and can never be re-lit.
