I got it in my first semester of med-school.
Ok so here is the medical perspective ( the condensed version of it), it is possible to be passed on from generation to generation but only by influence. Depression, is the mental disorder that comes from a chemical imbalance. OCD can be passed on from generation to generation, children imitating parents. It can be created through the minds need for organization and people can find a mental calmness in repeated routine. There are too many different varieties of OCD to be accurately studied and diagnosed.

I have a fairly large amount of experience with people with ocd and with depression; both, from my observation, are made worse, if not caused, by having way too much time to think about oneself. I am not a doctor, I just watch family members self-destructing on a regular basis. I have observed that these people, when kept busy, are not bothered by the 'disease' at all, it's only when they're sitting around doing nothing they seem to have problems.

According to Wikipedia, most researchers of OCD believe that it is caused by "abnormalties in the brain."

It doesn't seem to me that OCD is learned, but it might be hereditary. A few people of my dad's side of the family, including both of children (my brother and I), have OCD, but all of our obsessions/compulsions are focused on different things; I don't think any of us picked it up from seeing someone else.

I believe you are born with it. My Husband and his mother have mild OCD and I can start to see OCD symptoms with my daughter now that is only 3 1/2 yrs.

It can be biological but it's something that can also be learned. Traumatic events can also be a big part of it. I have OCD.

It probably isn't biological because my sister has it and I don't. I think it has something to do with women.

Seems to be about upbringing but it can be triggered by traumatic events.
