I would say it happens all the time, but I don't know if it is acceptable. I might be biased as for what I did, that is pants, not shorts in 40C heat. But hey, I didn't get sun burned. It really is a mix. And is more or less acceptable depending on where you are. If you are close to a tourist area such as a hotel, shorts are more acceptable. Mosques that got more tourist visits and bare legs or arms were a complete no-no where ready with scarfs they lent to people at the door.

As for the pyramids, I noticed there were all kinds of buses coming in with people jumping off in shorts and t-shirts, snapping a picture and whisked away by the bus 5 minutes later. Everyone else was fully covered. So it was 50-50, but there seemed to be a difference in the quality of the experience.

If "Being yourself" is to boldly disrespect the locals and not try follow the wishes of your host, then sure.

You can wear whatever you like in both Sharm and Pyramids, but while visiting mosques and churches or areas with less tourists it's better if you not revealing much just to show respect to the local religion and traditional people. For husband and children T-shirt and short is acceptable except inside religious places.
By the way in Sharm topless is not allowed, but you will find many ladies sunbathing topless without any problem. At the same time if you go to a town centre also try not to wear very sexy if you don't like to attract men from all over the world who are in Sharm.

If in sharm el sheik, it's so full of tourists, and beautiful resorts, I wouldn't worry about a dress code. When in Cairo and visiting the pyramids, women should wear not too revealing clothes. The best way to stay comfortable in august is to wear long loose skirts and capris, it's ok to wear a t shirt or even better a very thin loose fitting long sleeve shirt. A lot of the younger generation of Egypt dresses very european, and there are always tourists everywhere that wear whatever they want, but to show respect will also give you more respect from the locals.

Since Sharm is by the beach with lots of tourists and resorts, so from personal experience bikinis and shorts and tank tops arent usually frowned upon unless you're entering a mosque. However, at the pyramids, it's okay to wear a t-shirt, and capris, or bermuda shorts, but no tank tops and short shorts.

For girls that haven't reached the age puberty of yet, shorts and tanktops are acceptable.

Men are typically allowed to wear whatever they like, shorts are tshirts are fine.

People make the "dress code" out for more than it really is, and even if you walk down the street in a swimsuit, no one would say anything, even though its disrespectful. you'd probably get a lot of dirty looks though.

Sharm Elsheikh is more lenient when it comes to dressing. Go with conservative when visiting the pyramids.
So both opinions r right. Suit urself in Sharm ELsheikh , and suit the people in the Pyramids Area

ok, in sharm, there is NO dress code whatsoever.. however, when ur at the pyramids, it's advisable that u wear something "descent".. like pants and a t-shirt.. but still u'll find many foreigners running around in shorts and tank tops!
when ur in cairo itself (or giza for that matter) do urself a favour and wear pants.. otherwise u might have people staring

Egypt is a Muslim country so you would probably be stared at especially if your a woman and showed any skin. Cover your hair and don't dress in sexy, skintight, clothing that shows the outline of your figure as it's disrespectful. Dress modestly.
