I've done that once and didn't win, and just recently out of the blue one night, I submitted one of them. Has anyone here ever published their poems through that or won their cash prizes?

Yeah last time I just got a bunch of letters asking me to publish the poem and buy the book. If it's really a scam, than that's probably the only thing I'll get again. Hmmm, I know it's possible to get poems published and recieve cash for it. Not much I know, but is there some other poetry contest out there, or organization that isn't in it for the money so much but to really pay a talented poet?

I submitted a poem once, I didn't win though. Just a lot of offers to buy the book and an invite to a convention in order to accept an award. (would have cost a small fortune).
Your best bet is to submit to literary journals or e-zines, and keep trying.
The Pedestal Magazine is a good one.
You can also check out the Writer's Beat

It is a group of writers from all genres and all levels of experience. There are a lot of great links there!

Good luck!

In 2001, I have had a Poem published through there web site. I did not win any cash prize, just had to sign papers sent in the mail to have it published in a book called "Natures Echo's" released in Winter 2001. I did not buy the Book. Then I got a letter saying it will be put into audio format onto a CD collection of poems. I did not buy that either.

Poetry.com makes their money getting people to buy stuff with their poems in it. They might award a small cash prize occasionally, but never the big one.

When you submit to them, you also give over a large share of the rights to your poem. They can be published professionally and you'll never receive a cent.

If you think a poem is good enough for publication, get Poet's Market and submit it to regular markets.

Yes, I've submitted one poem in their contest. I got a letter a few weeks later I was a finalist and then later an email stating that my poem was going to be featured in a (expensive) anthology of poems also submitted to the contest.

Gurl:
Be careful, these are bad guys trying to take your $. Everyone who sends in a poem is a winner and they try to get everyone to purchase a book of poems with their work in it. The book is about Four times the cost it should be. Also they try to get you to go to shows with published authors of poems. Again the charge is four times what it should be. Hope you take my warning.

I wrote one.
They sent me a bunch of junk mail saying that I won stuff.
They wanted me to pay three hundred dollars for a trophy.
But, of course, I would be getting ten grand for winning!
SCAM.

Haven't won (one entry), just the offer to purchase a large coffeetable book with my poem in it.

Didn't win. I bought the book, and there was a typo in my poem. Boo.
