I almost failed to answer your question because of your "p.s." However, I would like for you to check the Care page of my website:
http://www.american-bonsai.com . I am sure it will give you lots of help for your class. Please forget about starting a bonsai from seed, you'll do much better by either digging a tree from your yard or by getting one from your local nursery. If you have specific questions, you're welcome to email me at:

If this is a project for class... forget about staring a bonsai from seed. Your best bet is to purchase a tree, then raise it.

Bonsai is an art that takes years to master, so I am unsure as to why an instructor would use this as assignment. It simply can not be done over the course of a semester. You may want to get further clarification on the assignment.

However, any tree can be used for bonsai, but one of the the easiest to manipulate is the Juniper. Since you are a beginner, this would be your best bet.

Good luck!

I would start buy going to the library and researching - that's free. You can use many different kinds of trees or plants for this and you do not have to buy special seeds. What you need is a plant that will have a woody type stem and will take a lot of trimming. You also will be cutting back the roots so it should be a hardy plant. Most books will recommend good starting plants. I have 2 growing now but killed many over the last couple of years.

Many types of trees and shrubs can be used for bonsai. Maples, conifers, junipers, camellias. Why not look around your area and see what is available. My local nursery even stocks bonsai starter plants (very small immature trees) especially for bonsai.
You may be even able to source seed from your garden or your neighbours, I've even seen cottoneasters used. Why not google bonsai sites and see what type of trees they are using. Any king of tree seed will do no need to buy on line.

Also look under trees and shrubs for suitable seedling trees. Good luck.
