Not unless you can trick it into thinking it's closed. Besides, the little laser could cause you serious eye damage. I know what you were thinking, since the tray has the motor and lens on it, unlike a regular DVD drive on a desktop. But its really too dangerous to try.

The short answer is "no." The laser that does the burning (and reading) has to be able to be positioned properly above the disk, and if the drive is open, that's not possible.

No you can't, because of everything that everyone else has said, but also because the disk can't rotate at all when it's open.
