FIrst of all a few details about myself: I'm a college educated, single, straight, 24-year-old male who enjoys running, reading, writing, outdoorsey activities, etc.

I grew up in a small town in Nebraska, went to school in Missouri and have lived in Los Angeles (and worked in the entertainment industry) for the past year and a half, but am now ready to get the heck out of the city and find a job that's a little more fulfilling.

A friend (he's of a similar age and background) and I have been discussing moving up to Seattle in June, and I was curious what the opinions on Yahoo were about the city.

Once again, remember that I'm looking for a city quite different from Los Angeles and one that suits my interests/needs/background a bit more. A large city with a small-town vibe.

Good idea to head north to Seattle, or is there somewhere better?

Thanks.

It sounds as though Seattle may be a good fit for you. First of all, you've lived in the Midwest, which means you'll appreciate the mild climate here. Most people who move here from the South or from California complain about the rain in the winter.

Also, if you like outdoors activities and running, Seattle is a great place to be. There are plenty of trails, parks, and outdoor activities in Seattle and the surrounding areas.

As for the small-town vibe, Seattle has that moreso than any other metropolitan area I've been to. The neighborhoods are unique and make you feel as though you are in a smaller community, even though larger city amenities are nearby. On the bad side though, we also struggle with many of the same issues that LA does...traffic, high housing prices, and homelessness.

As for other places you might consider...Denver or Boulder, Colorado are also great for outdoorsy types and they tend to get more sunshine than we do here in Seattle.

If you are interested, there's this great website that I found a few years ago. It matches your preferences, values, and ideals with cities across the US.

Hope that helps! Good luck with whatever you choose.

First of all, it rains less in Seattle than in New York or Chicago---it does drizzle in the winter quite a bit, but our reputation for rain isn't all its cracked up to be. It's only very rarely pouring. I like the weather---never really hot or really cold, rarely snows very much, and the rain we do get makes things green.

There is pretty much any activity you want here---especially if you like outdoorsy things as Seattle has a lot more nature right inside the city than most American cities do---largely thanks to our unusual geography. (A lot of hills, lakes/inlets, forests). We have several trails for running and biking inside the city. I also love the diversity and international feeling of Seattle.

Main drawbacks---it can be dreary in the winter. Housing can be somewhat expensive. Traffic can be nasty, and although we have a decent bus system---there's no mass transit. If you like big chain stores or megamarts, they are few and far between in non-suburban Seattle, but people like me find that a good thing.

I'd suggest coming to Seattle to visit to have a look around---it's a very different type of city that many people like.

Living here for 3 years, I've never heard of anybody who hates Seattle, but there are drawbacks, and it's really a matter of personal taste.

I grew up in LA and San Diego and moved to Seattle 13 years ago. It's a great city and from your description of yourself it sounds like you would like it a lot. If you're like me, you'll miss the beaches and (real) Mexican food of SoCal. Every time I go back to SD the first thing I do is get carne asada at Roberto's and head for Ocean Beach. Also everyone here drives a lot slower. But it's a fun city and if you're the outdoor-sy type there are a lot of nearby, beautiful places for camping/hiking/mtn biking. Do it! Jump on I-5 and come on up!

the people that are saying it rains too much are probably people that don't live in Seattle. Yes it is what Seattle is known for, but I have lived here all my life (20 years) and I would never want to live anywhere else! we experience all weather situations not just rain! It is a great city its so multi-cultural and artsy, we have so much to do here, Seattle summers are the greatest! tons of outdoorsy activities available, you could run along alki beach, read in one of cafes, there are poetry clubs, you will love Seattle! come join the fun!!

go to www.Seattle.gov click all the links you'll see almost all of what Seattle has to offer

also go to "drey"'s question she asked "what do you think of Seattle" there are a lot of great opinions in that questionnaire

I think that you would love Eugene, Oregon. It is the most versatile city, and everyone is soooo nice. Eugene has a wonderful atmosphere, people from practically every background and they all get along sooooo greatly. It is a very clean town, not too big, but big enough that you wouldn't get bored and, well, beautiful outdoors for those beautiful summer days!! I strongly suggest you visit and see what you think! P.S. It is a college town, so lots of people your age and interest, also the home of the University of Oregon Ducks football team!!! go ducks!!!!!

certainly. Seattle is one in all my admired cities. CA is great in terms of stunning, heat climate, yet Seattle is the region to stay in the Northwest. you will like it :-) And, in case you omit the sunlight, there is often Sequim - 3 hrs faraway from Seattle, somewhat place in something suggested as a rain shadow - was desolate tract, yet is now irrigated and eco-friendly. amazing climate there.

I enjoy Seattle even though we live in the S.F. Bay Area.. Summer is awesome. Great music venues, places to eat and things to do.. If you can handle the rain.. then it's for you.. I've played golf up there in the rain.. bbq'ed in the rain too. lol
