Since there is no condenser contactor on a normal vehicle system, I assume this is a home unit. Please check the names of the pieces. What is a condenser coil impacted contactor?

I assume you mean the contactor that is in the condenser unit, outdoors. Some professions would term this part a relay. It acts as kind of a remote controlled switch.

If this is the part you are referring to, it is a critical part, as most of the system's parts are. It's function is to act as a switch for the 220 volt line to the compressor. As such, it handles a large amount of power. All such switches will have a certain amount of burning, it is the nature of the beast. How much is a subjective thing.

I would say that if all that the technician sees is a small amount of black discoloration, it is not really to replace. A lot of black discoloration is worse. A lot of blue discoloration is a definate problem. A tiny bit of pitting is also okay. A moderate amount is not okay. The question is, what is a little and what is moderate.

If you, as a layperson can see it, it is probably too much. Anyway, this should be a fairly cheap fix so why not just have it done. How old is the unit?

Note that there is 220 volts on the circuit, even with the a/c turned off and not running. There must be an outside cutoff very close to the outside unit. It is probably mounted on the wall within three feet of the outside unit, the condenser. This MUST be turned to the off position. This MUST be verified with a volt meter before touching anything within the condenser housing. This cannot be stressed enough, this is a very fatal voltage.

P.S. this has NOTHING to do with how much dirt is in the coils, either outside or inside. The dirt should be removed from both, but that has nothing to do with this situation. Unless, of course it is so dirty that the contactor is plugged with dirt.

If it is a home ac system you are talking about, then mabey I can explain. The condenser coil outside needs to be free of debris because that is where the system gets rid of the heat that it has absorbed from the indoor coil or evaporator coil. They can clog up from multiple things. If it's bad, they can clean it which may be a lot of work depending on the unit. Some coils are single layer (single pass), or multiple layer which could be two singles or one big thick coil. Either way, have them show you the amount of gunk. The contactor, if burnt badly enough, will weld itself shut upon closing to run and not shut the compressor off. Not Good. Contactors have varried life spans. All depending on useage and age of the system. You can have the technician show you that. The points are what is imporant. They will be pitted and black around the outter edges. A good tech should not have a problem showing you anything that needs attention. Make sure that he looked at the indoor coil condition to. That coil should be clear also. It all comes down to efficency. Clean coils = low energy cost. Hope this helped! 14 years in the AC trade.

First clean the bathroom. Change the soap and towels and quickly clean the toilet bowl if you have time. If you have flowers on hand, put some in the kithcen or living room. A messy living room always looks nice with flowers in it. Make sure the sofa cushions are straightened up too. Then tidy up the entrance area. For example, if you have an entrance closet line up the shoes in an orderly fashion because this is the first home impression the guests will be left with. And then quickly go to the bathroom and put a light shade of lipstick, blush, and cream like Nivea or Neutrogena if you have some on hand to smell nice or use some light perfume. Make sure you look decent but casual. The best thing to wear with company over is a decent shirt with a skirt during the spring, fall, and early summer. During the winter, pants will be just as fine as well. If the company have children, ask your children if you have to quickly tidy up their rooms. They may protest, but don't worry if they don't because kids will alway be kids. And then make sure that the kitchen looks presentable if you plan for the company to eat in it because a messy kitchen makes the worst impression ever. If you can't do the dishes, no problem. Just comment, "I had a hard workday last night. I was so tired." Don't seem too serious either. Be casual and homely, welcoming and friendly. People like friendly personalities better than a clean house. As for the food, watch Rachel Ray for simple pasta recipes that are marvelous and spectacular and anything but simple in taste! And make sure you have light wine if the company are old enough to drink wine and if they are not against it. Wine invites conversation and a light feeling in the air. Excellent question by the way, and good luck!
