Massive cataclysm is not impossible...it is just highly unlikely to happen in our lifetimes. But, think of the massive disasters that have come to the USA in just the last 100 years...WWI, The Great Depression, WWII and the Cold War. In just the first year of this century we had the greatest attack ever on American soil by an enemy entity (according to the number of lives lost).
In my mind, the greatest threat we face today is not a military threat or even a geological or cosmic threat...it is an economic threat. Imagine the deaths that would result if our communications were to fail. No deliveries of food...most grocery stores only have about three days of food on the shelves. No trucking, no rail, no air = no food, no clean water, no energy...and no way to get any. Almost no one in this country is prepared to last more than a week on their own. Look at the chaos Katrina spewed...and look how weak all our national resources were to cope with that little problem....and look at the masses of helpless people left in the wake of that storm.
If another "Great Depression" did come...and it is actually more likely to happen than not....we would be screwed....and we would be screwed mainly because we have become so dependant on others....the government in particular. If anything ever does happen, and you are not at least semi prepared to help yourself, both mentally and materially...just sit back and accept your fate...you probably brought it on yourself.
We are so dependant on foreign energy sources and on foreign economies, we really are at serious risk of seeing a real disaster...not a cataclysm...in our lifetimes.

That's a good question and I know something like that has been raised. That would be more like something that would come about if there was one or both instances. Severe nuke winter, or a combination of lasers and nuke energy disrupting the atmosphere around the earth. But it will not happen until the 'day after tomorrow.' I did enjoy that one myself. There was some great computer graphics in there.

This is a brilliant film, I almost wish it would happen in my lifetime and that I would be one of the survivors, but the way America heeds the Global Warming, warning anything is possible. Can you imagine Europe under 15 feet of snow? Where could we hide? Or wait safely until its all clear? It all sounds so exciting, and to think the third world may accept us as refugees, what a turnaround!

It COULD happen soon or it MAY happen a million years from now or it s a POSSIBILITY it will never happen.
Don't forget that that this is a Movie.
The writer has taken certain facts and twisted them ever so slightly, so they are still believable, but make a more dramatic story.
Taken separately, yes all these things are possible.
Although not really to the degree portrayed.

I don't know but if you watched that you should watch Day of Destruction, it is like Day After Tomorrow but it is based only in the United States and it is mostly hurricanes, tornados, and lightening storms. It is a really good movie though.

Well to be honest if we could determine these factors we would never be impacted by the natural disasteres around the world.
as England doesnt land on the earths plates we are less likely to witness this first but either way, were ever we are in the world we would only find out when its too late.
My oppinion we should concentrate on preventing global warming but do not worry too much it is unlikely to hapen during our life time.

Sadly it is highly unlikely to occur in exactly the same way, let's see how many of us survive bird flu, terrorism and falling out of bed before we look at the issue again in about 6 years time.

The film was over the top, but global warming is accelerating and I reckon we'll see some serious changes within 10 years.

I don't know but as someone who lives in a very cold climate, I laughed my *** of during that movie. I know it wasn't supposed to be a comedy, but all the stupid stuff they tried...when it's *really* that cold, no way. Like grabbing metal with their bare hands? No way. Metal in those temps burns like hell to the touch and at the least, it would frost bite your hands.
If it happens in my lifetime, I'll have beach-front property.
