Correct question is do any cough mixtures have any therapeutic effect. Most honest health professionals would say none at all! In general there are no useful 'cough mixtures', the concept is a throw back to Victorian days of tonics and the like.

Theoretically they divide into two groups:
1) Expectorants- these make you cough more!
2) Cough suppressants-these reduce cough by suppressing the cough impulse. The cough impulse is a protective one which the body uses to expel material, dust, pollutants or mucus from the airways. Suppressing it may cause pooling of secretions and increase infection risk.

Short lived infrequent cough is best left alone since the old adage if nothing works give nothing is a good one. Recurrent or prolonged cough needs investigation to exclude underlying causes such as atypical infection, the commonest of these is still probably whooping cough, despite immunisation, or asthma which is very common indeed, but often mild and below the level that needs therapy.

Hi,

You need to be sure it is a chesty cough before you take the wrong medicine. If you feel there is something to bring up and you are actually managing to then yes you have a chesty cough and need an expectorant. This is especially so if the mucus is coloured( green/yellow) as this means it is infected and you should be encouraged to cough it out. Don't take a cough suppressant as this keeps the infection down there....sorry that is graphic and gross

The best expectroarnt is covonia you can also take it in a little hot water to help with the vapours.

If your cough is not chesty but tickly and irritating, you need a supressant in which case pholcodeine linctus is your best bet. It is a generic bottle and cheap.

Hope you feel better soon

If you have had this cough for over a week and coughing up green sputum, then you need to go to the doctor as you may have a chest infection and will need antibiotics.

If this is not the case, then inhaling steam is the best thing. It Will make you cough more for the first couple of minutes while inhaling but should settle the symptoms after that.

Covonia (night time) is excellent if you want to sleep but can't because your cough keeps you awake.

People often ignore the next tip....you need to rest, take a couple of days off work...you'll get better faster.

GWS!!

Chesty Cough?

As a diplomate of oriental medicine, I'll give you a slightly detail list for your basic condition...these are chinese formulas that you can order online...I do not sell herbs.

If you really want it cured and gone...here's what to do:

If you're cough has alot of mucous, is it easy to expectorate?

If so, if it's clear...try er chen tang...if it's white or green, try xiao qing long tang...and if it's yellowish...try qing qi huan tan tang...

However, if it's difficult to expectorate...try sha shen mai men dong.

These are basic guidelines that will work for 80% of any congested coughs.

Our site will be up shortly...and will provide free health and herbal consultations anytime...Stay tuned.
