I got a calla lily from a local store and want to keep the plant indoors. Growing it outside isn't an option because my house is surrounded by pine trees and I will be moving out of my house soon. It's also too cold to leave outside right now (I live in Louisiana). What should I do to keep my plant happy and producing flowers - it's got some flowers right now?

With a good grow light and lots of care this can be done. There are two types of grow lights; one for foliage and one for flowering. Be sure and use one for flowering. Here is the info you need.

Poppies are a lovely colourful choice. But they can be fragile.
Annuals take aprox 65-90 days to flower, so you will have to plant your seeds at least 90 days before your big day. They need full or half sun light to thrive so a good sunny window ledge will suffice, but keep the window shut on windy days as the flowers emmerge, because the stems can break. They are very tollerent of dry conditions but can not abide wet soil, so drain well. Pots with a sandy compost mix with saucers underneath should do the job.
Failing that you can buy poppies in pots from most garden centres just ask for a bit of help choosing some that should flower around the time you need them to. You can get some really beautiful oriental ones that grow up to two feet.
Good luck.

They belong outside. Inside they will not have enough light and they are vulnerable to fungus gnats and mealy bugs. With insufficient light, the foliage will get very soft and lanky. Until it warms up outside, give it as much light as possible, and keep the soil just moist, but never soggy. Bloom is dependent upon the plant getting as much light as possible.

You can certainly keep one inside for a few weeks to enjoy the flowers until it warms up outside, and they grow quite happily in pots-so that you can take the pot with you when you move. Put it in the sunniest place in the yard until you move. Callas love high humidity, so Louisiana is a good place for them to be.

A lot of bulbs have higher zones that is why people like me (montana zone 4) put them in pots during the summer, let them bloom and than take them indoors during the winter and put them in a peat mixture to let them rest and when spring comes start all over again. I know some people put them in pots and just let them freeze and then buy new ones in the spring. I really dont think you can have them bloom all year because it is a bulb or a tuber and most of these kind of plants do need a resting period like winter. I have just started pulling mine out from the basement and planting them. They are a beautiful flower it would be nice if you could have them all year.
