Old Quarry Tiles

As someone else has already pointed out, really old quarry floors were originally laid directly onto the soil. This will most certainly bring you a big problem with damp. If you are not qualified yourself, find someone who is to give you advice and guidance.
If you decide that it is okay to lay a new floor on the top, have a good look around the room to see if this will create any problems. For example, you will have to take a piece off the bottom of all the doors, but watch out for any electrical or plumbing complications which may arise.

The one snag that I can see is that if the floor is of some age then the chances are that there is no damp course. Old floors were laid on a dirt base and to be sure take a tile up to establish if this was the case here. If not then go ahead. Otherwise, dig the lot up and dig down at least four inches before laying Visqueen and a concrete screed allowing for the thickness of the new tile to make up to floor level.

If your floor is sound & flat not too much polish ect on it a good tile adhesive straight on top will give you a good job for ceramic tiles do not screed over before hand as this would cause bother ( fix & grout good adhesive ) you may need to scrap off polish or grease ect to give a good key

I think you will have to screed (I think that's the word) that is lay in skin of concrete over the top and tile on top of that. It should be fine as long as there is no other problem other than the floor is old.

I wouldn't think so unless you intend to tile under your kitchen units, then you will have to raise the units a little higher.

It is possible, however the task requires some tools you probably wont have around and is extremly messy. Call a local home improvement store to see if they offer classes.
