No WAS ... Dave Gahan IS the lead singer for Depeche Mode, with Martin Gore kicking in leads for several songs (Somebody, A Question of Lust, etc.). With the exception of their most recent CD, "Playing the Angel", Martin has also had most of the songwriting credits.
Dave Gahan also has one solo CD out, while Martin has 2 (the first was an EP that came out in '89).

WAS? Why the past tense?
Depeche Mode are still recording.
Dave Gahan normally sings most leads vocals but Martin Gore also occasionally sings leads vocals on some songs.
