Squier is made by Fender as kind of an entry level guitar. Tone is the main difference between all guitars.

Ive played "no-name Strats" where the guitar is so cheap that the neck has absolutely no color and is almost white, the body is very thin and the guitar itself is very light.. The bridge can only have three springs instead of five, the list goes on, And yet, without upgrading it, but instead giving the guitar a professional set up, I was able to turn an $89 no name Chinese made copy Strat into one of the best playing Strats Ive ever played, even comparable to a Fender. My favorite Squier Strat, which is a major upgrade from a cheap no-name copy, is the Squier Standard Strat.. Believe me, you notice the difference right away.. And to think, these are budget Fenders... And yes, Ive owned REAL Fenders, REAL Squiers, and REAL no-name copies.. A lot of the differences wouldnt be so evident if the guitars were professionally set up. :)

Fender is a company formed by Leo Fender that first created guitar models like Sttratocaster, Telecaster, and that created the first electric bass guitar ever. When they got in financial trouble in the 70s, they sold licenses to several companies like Squier (cheaper models) and Schecter (upper scale, but they produce their original models only, by now). Later they bought Squier so now you have Fender Stratocasters and Squier Stratocasters in the market. Additionally, there are Fender models made in Mexico and theose made in the USA, which are the best quality and the most expensive. Squiers are cheap, but they are not very good guitars, you'll be best off buying the Mexican "Player's Strat" through musicciansfriend.com or anpother online store, they are about $550 but feature most of their American brothers' uptown features, like better pickups & such. If you have up to $1500 to spend, then by all means go with one of the Custom Shop American models (though for that much you can buy an Ibanez or a Carvin that is much better than any Fender).

Squire's are made by fender, they're the cheaper version. Cheaper pickups and electrics but a great starter guitar. If you're buying a fender stratocaster it basically comes down to where its made; Mexico, Japan or America. The Mexican ones use slighty not as good materials and are generally not put together so well. The Japanese ones use the same materials but are put together well. The American ones are the best (and most expensive) and use the best materials and have the best craftmanship. Don't let me put you off though, all are great, its just in case you were wondering about the difference in price

Fender Stratocaster is the guitar that was made by Fender in the 50's and 60's. the company was then bought out by CBS, who subsequently sold it to some Japanese company who renamed them Squier, I think. I have a 1972 Fender [CBS] which is white and left handed, the nice part is the concave neck, which was really nice to play. I found I couldn't get used to the Gibson neck which is flat. so if your used to a flat neck, and you want a Fender, play it for at least an hour to find out if you can get on with a concave neck

The Squier Strat's a damn good guitar for the money, but they're made in China & don't use the same quality of wood or pickups as the USA Strats. I'd buy a Squier & a set of decent pickups before a Mexican Strat though. But money talks & if you've got lots then a nice 62 replica was where I put mine. I'll never need another guitar.

it depends but its mainly pick ups, hardware and squires bottom line some made in USA but mainly other cheaper labour countries where they are
made -assembled saying that if you are happy with your squire try a pick up upgrade say emg or Texas specials or if you can find a jvc fender snatch it they are a great strat as fender was under hugh pressure from tokai ibanez as their strats caused a major upset for fender i have a proper Clapton USA strat cost me a lot of overtime and hard work its very nice and i have a tokai lawsuit sunburst strat maple neck its all beat up buckle rash paint chips dirty worn in neck etc with very early emg pickups all faded its an original very early Dave gilmour spc and exg tone pots cut down trem arm and its not a fender but i have played fenders that are far more expensive like my Clapton and they dont even come close to feel sound and comfort of my beaten up tokai gilmour
my point is you dont have to shell lots out for a USA strat there is a lot of dogs out there as i learned but hey my tokai looks a dog but its a wolf in sheeps clothing anyway check out tokai silvestar or goldstar or upgrade yours use eBay for a look at pickups or the fantastic warmoth parts and build your own but it aint cheap
best of luck

A "Squier" is a cheapo chinky import that is marketed by Fender.
A Mexican Strat is okay
A Jap Strat is better
An American Strat is the best, but costly.
Of course, none of these are as good as a Gibson SG or Les Paul, but the American made ones come the closest
