you may be able to buy a furnace filter that has to be cut to size. It has no borders on it and cuts easily with a pair of scissors. Try a home improvement store. It basically just comes in a "sheet"

Here are the risks of no filter / clogged filter:
- AC coil will clog with dirt - no heating, no cooling, increased expense
- Blower motor can self destruct due to overheating.

Alternatives:
- Buy more than one set of filters at a time (duh)
- Buy a good quality larger filter (pleated paper rather than just the fiberglass which filters nothing) and cut it down to size. Re-tape the cut sides with duct tape to put the cardboard edges back in place and prevent leakage. Replace filthy filter with temporary filter.

Do not take the filter out and leave it out. It will clog up your system! You could try vacuming the filter and putting it back in.
