Both the male ( rare first name for males) and female name 'Zoe' is originally Greek meaning 'life'. It also means spiritual life as an enlightment of God. It is an ancient greek name. This was the name of two early saints martyred under the emperor Hadrian, the other martyred under Dicoletian. It was also the name of a ruling Byzantine Empress ( c. 978-1050).The name date much earlier though.

The name may also refer to Aeon ( Zoe), an aeon of Gnostic belief systems .
