As a Warren from rural Virginia, with a family history of witchraft in the 1800's and a BIGTIME lover of this show... I will anwser your question.
Prue Halliwell was the key character for the 1st three seasons.
She was a strong leader, smart, and beautiful.
Prue needed an actress with the same qualities and Shannen Doherty delivered.
They could have looked for a million years and NEVER found a better acctress to play the part.
Also... Another aspect of the show was the on film chemistery of real life best pals Shannen Dorherty and Holly Marie Combs.
They really seemed like sisters and that made a world of difference in the early days of the show..
Even though the Pheobe character was there from beginning to the end, allthough not played by milano in the unaired piolt.. It was the strong Prue character who helped get the show off the ground.
I bet it would have been a totally different seasons 4 - 8 or 10 had Lori Romm "spelling"? , kept playing Pheobe.
I love Shannen Doherty, mostly because of the Prue Halliwell character.

Prue. Hands down. It's not about the actress who plays them. It's about the character; unlike what the other people are answering. Prue's character was much more developed and she wasn't foolish like Phoebe was. She was also much more powerful than Phoebe even could be. Did Prue lose her powers? No. Did Prue marry a demon on her own free will? No. Did Prue realize Cole for what he really was? Yes. Just think about it, Prue was the better character; although Alyssa is a somewhat better actress.

Alyssa of course. Shannen seems to me would be a real witch in person{no pun intended} I used to be a fan of Shannens back in the day. Little House: New Beginning and early 90120. I've always liked Alyssa, I think she's so pretty.

Alyssa Milano..at least you don't hear any crap about her being a smart as* and getting herself fired like Shannen did on two different shows....as a matter of fact Alyssa must be smarter then the others too because you really don't ever hear anything bad about her so I would say she is my favorite...Plus she's a hot tie..

Prue was killed by shakks, the wind demon, Phoebe was taken into the underworld so she couldn't bring her back to life by calling for Leo, and Leo could only save Piper when he found her. Shannon Doherty in real life had become a real b**** and was sacked. That's why they killed her off.

Phoebe.
Prue's character was too matronly. Of course she did have sex more often than the other girls. I would have like it if she had more fun. I still don't get the halter top thing with jeans. It is like it is warm enough to wear the top but not to wear shorts. Interesting. But I would say Phoebe before the tattoos and the boys hair cut.

Alyssa Milano is already a proven actress. Her character has grown and evolved along the lines she/it should.
Doherty was/ is a poor example of acting and living.
