I think that in terms of quality of public and private institutions, North Carolina and Virginia are the best. NC not only has UNC- Chapel Hill, but also Duke University and a number of high-quality smaller schools like Wake Forest and Furman. Virginia has several excellent state schools- UVA, William & Mary, and VA Tech, in addition to Shenandoah Conservatory (for music), George Mason, and Mary Baldwin College.
Texas is also very good; UT-Austin is very good, and Rice University (in Houston) is top-notch, especially for engineering. Georgia has Georgia Tech, and UGA, and a number of good private schools like Emory, Berry College, Morehouse, Spelman, and Agnes Scott College.
You will be able to find a good private college in any state in the South, but the ones listed above are the states with the best public universities. You didn't specify what exactly you were interested in, so I wanted to cover both bases.

Every Southern state has great universities and university towns. In Texas, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Austin all have excellent schools and great non-univ activities. Georgia has Athens and Atlanta, Mississippi has University of Southern Mississippi (in Hattiesburg), Alabama has U Alabama, Tennessee has U Tenn Knoxville, North Carolina has UNC with lots of good branches....depends on whether you want a big city or smaller town, coastal life or something more inland, good bbq or good seafood, etc.

Georgia. Georgia Tech is the forth best engineering school in the country and Emory University is the 18th best all around university in the nation. Also, Georgia has other good universities such as University of Georgia, Georgia State, and Mercer.

Well, Texas A&M and Texas are good southern schools...so is Auburn, LSU, and U. of Alabama. You might even give U. of South Carolina a try. It just depends what you consider "southern".

interior the southeast, faculties like Duke college (the most in call for southeastern college), Vanderbilt college, college of Virginia, Georgia Tech, Washington college in St. Louis, and others are very selective and are the elite faculties of the south. if you're speaking about the southwest, Rice college and college of Texas are spectacular faculties too. Do you stay interior the south or are you attracted to faculties in that area?

Depends. Do you want fun in the sun and partying or a serious college?
