My son's birthday is coming up in a couple of months and he's into yu-gi-oh. I'm clueless so could someone please tell me which cards are the most sought after as I'd like to really surprise him.

Its nice you wish to do this for your son, however, since we do not know your son, it would be rather hard for us to know which card he is interested in.
If he is just a Collector, than i would suggest any of the older cards, you can check at your local card shop, or online store, and they could help you with rarity.
If he is a player, than i would suggest you ask him what he would like, but if you want to surprise him, try to get interested in the game, and learn about it. You will find that he will enjoy playing with you more than if you get him a good card. But if you still wish to do that just ask him about it passively.
Several Good Cards:
Exodia-Set of five
God Cards: Ra, Slipher, or Obolisk
New Packs, or A set. Can be found on ebay...

The rarest? well, there are some collector cards that cost thousands, like Des Volstgalph. But only certain versions of those cards are actually worth a lot. For a kid's birthday, just get a booster pack or something like that. If he plays yugioh, get him a structure deck. god cards are usually fake, and exodia pieces are pretty much useless for most players. If he likes collecting, any of the cards mentioned by previous people would do.

Hmmm if he's just getting into it there's this Folder called the Master Collection. there are 2 now, and they have 6 cards which were popular including exodia the forbidden one and a few booster packs in them. however I think they are hard to find now.
Also you can buy tins which has one card and 5 booster packs. both these products are great for presents. then link is at the bottom
But if he's older and plays in tournaments... try to find him a Mirror Force, one of the most sought after cards in the game.

My son has the Exodia cards which consist of 5 cards that make up one character. It is rare and we found them at a card show and paid some good cash for them. Which consist of right arm of the forbidden one

DO NOT GO TO EBAY!!!!!! YOU WILL GET SCREWED. but some of the rarest cards are the five exodia pieces in the game.the three egyptian god cards.slifer,obelisk and ra.go to bbtoystore,and search google but do not use ebay,i tried to and i get ripped off

The rarest of the cards is one of these: any of the three god cards, or Exzoda (sp). I believe these are the rarest but I could be wrong.
