My first gear started acting up a few months ago - it jerks a lot when I shift into it, and recently the same thing has started happening with my second gear. What do you think the problem is and how much do you think it would cost to fix?

Sounds like your clutch isn't dis-engaging all the way. Check your clutch fluid level (if very low, you may have to bleed the clutch - just like the brakes.) Also check that the clutch fork isn't broken or bent. If these are all OK, then its time to hand over your wallet and open up the tranny.

Good luck!

First thing, I would suggest getting your clutch adjustment checked and while the mechanic is under the car tell him to check the gear oil level, the universal joints and the engine and gearbox mounts. A look to see if the clutch fork is cracked won't hurt either, at this stage.
These are the cheaper points to check. If it continues you may have to drop the gearbox and take the lid off for a look see - now is when it starts to get expensive.
Bit hard to diagnose from here, but these points may turn up a reason for your problem.

It sounds like your 1st and 2nd gear syncronizers and sliders are going out. You should take to a repair shop and have it looked at. If it needs rebuilt it will just depend on whats wrong and where you take it to determine a cost. If I was to guess probably between 1200 to 2000. Good luck hope everything works out for you.

I don't think it is your stick shift. It sounds like your clutch may be going out or you may have a bad throw-out bearing. It is also possible that if you have the clutch adjusted, it may take care of the problem, albeit temporary.

Have the clutch bled and adjusted. If this doesn't take care of it, have the clutch replaced.

Info that would be helpful... What type of car? What year? How many miles?

sounds like the synchronizes or going out. To me the best bet would be just replace the tranny instead of a rebuild. What the synchronizes do is keep it in that gear.
