My brother is running a business as a massage therpaist. He is trying to figure out ways to Market his business to those who maybe in need. He had treated senior citizens, children with asthma, and those suffering from depression. The question is where to look for new customers and possible media attention.

At thiis point he works at a chiropractors office Friday through Sunday. He has had customers because of this but needs more to survive. Where should he look to advertise?

I suggest networking with physicians, dentists, chiropractors, other RMTs and getting ideas from them. Bodywork Biz is a website that also can give him some ideas. Other than this, I teach my students to contact support groups and make presentations to them that can show them the benefits of a massage in a comfortable environment. Some groups welcome groups for expectant mothers, gyms, osteoporosis support groups, cancer support groups, HIV/AIDs support groups... really think about their symptoms, how massage can help and sell so that they understand the benefits and are not forced...if a support group gives you 1/2 hour to talk you can meet up to 20+ potential clients and give out brochures, business cards (w/ magnets) pens, etc to get your name out there...even bottled water with a new wrapper can travel to get your name out there to people who you may never get a chance to meet...
tell your brother good luck.

Suggest he reads, "Business Mastery" 3rd edition by Cherie M. Sohnen-Moe
It is a great book designed for massage therapists who want to be successful.
Also, "Marketing Your Services for people who hate to sell" by Rick Crandall, PhD. Not massage specific but still a lot of valuable info.
Also, in my experience, advertising can drain a lot of money without a return. Business cards are number one. A yellow pages ad is number two. Referrals are number three. Referrrals can come from Dr's, PT's, other therapists and especially clients. Having incentives for referrals is key.
Get a massage chair and work at sporting events, charities and other areas. Chair massage gets clients quickly and you can set up just about anywhere, the beach, the park, the mall, the airport or go to businesses and schools, nursing homes, etc.
Good luck.

Word of mouth being the best form of advertisement - having him read and apply the information in a book called The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies may help him be able to get to places that others can not - boosting the free advertising. Others have put up the chairs outside (inside if the store agrees) places like grocery stores.

One way I promote my business is to set up massage chairs at car dealerships during the week, the salesmen get a massage for a dollar a minute the customers get 10 minutes free if they buy a car, the dealership wins with an influx of business and I win because all those bodies bring referrals

Depends on where he is running his business. Is it out of his house? That's going to be difficult. If he's able to he should have flyers added to the local paper or penny saver. Can he work out of an office, like at a chiropracter's office? That'll get him alot of clients. I know of a few people that got started that way by only working a few days a week. What about a salon?

Contact fitness centers, set up a booth at local health fairs sponsored by hospitals, call local companies to see if he can provide chair massages to employees on breaks or lunch hour. Contact mental health centers and promote the concept of holistic approach to using massage to promote emotional well-being.

run ad special in the local paper. Most ads for massage do not give a price so there for I have never had one. If they were running a special and put the price I might go.

a massage therapist i know drums up business at the local country club. he did work there as well, but i don't think that's necessary. he left several bus. cards at the hostess desk in the club's restaurant. those country clubbers have money and like to be pampered.

The most effective way to advertise? Make out flyers, sit down with the local phone book and randomly pic out people to send flyers to. This is one of the most effective ways and one of the most unherd of ways to advertise, another way is to advertise with your local radio startion.

I suggest joining one of the massage trade groups like ABMP or AMTA. One of the reasons for their existence is to help MT's.
