In the 1800s, it was very 'in' for the elite upper class to wear white powdered wigs with curls. This included politicians and judges, as well as plantation and buisness owners. Judges continued this tradition on through to the early 1900s, and none wear them today. It is a comical representation that is often portrayed in movies and cartoons.

Not all judges and lawyers wear wigs! Many civil and family cases are presented or heard by lawyers and judges who wear ordinary clothing.
Criminal cases in the Crown Court and cases in the higher courts may feature judges and lawyers wearing wigs. This is partly due to tradition, partly to create a solemn atmosphere and partly to help preserve the privacy of a judge who is likely to look very different without a wig on!

Not just the silly wigs! Have you ever noticed the even sillier glove thing sewn into the back of barristers silly gowns? Believe me it's there! Apparently it's for grateful litigants to stick their fee in to save the poor barrister the indignity of having to ask for it. Not used now of course; wouldn't be big enough would it?
Seriously, it's a class thing really; meant to cow us plebs in the presence of our betters. As you say. lol!

If they still do that and especially here in this country it's got to be comic relief, it takes the edge off the seriousness of a court trial. But seriously I don't know.

Not sure but I think that it has something to do with the lack of hygiene at the time and the appearance of lice, similar to the ruffs that you sore worn in elizabethan times which were meant to hinder the spread of lice.

YOU MUST BE BRIT ISH OR AUSTRALIAN. NO OTHER COURT SYSTEM DOES THAT. I BELIEVE ITIS TO SHOW YOUR POSITION OR RANK IN THE COURT. THE JUDGES WEAR THE LONGEST AND CURLIEST WIGS WHILE A ROOKIE ATTORNEY JUST WEARS A SCALP WIG.
IN THE U.S JUDGES DON'T WEAR THE WHITE POWDERED WIGS AT ALL. JUST THE BLACK ROBE
