The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood and The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell are two you may want to consider. You can read about them at the links below, which I suggest you do before taking them on--they both fall under the category of thought-provoking social commentary and are probably more disturbing than they are witty and touching. Neither is a romance, however. Another good one is John Grisham's The Testament; it is witty and touching without being disturbing. Good luck finding something you're interested in.

If you like witty, try Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. There are dozens of books in the series, but I believe the first one is The Color of Magic.
Also, try Lamb by Christopher Moore. I laughed out loud several times.

I don't like romance novels either!
For a little mystery/suspense try Harlan Coben's 'Gone For Good'.
It will keep you guessing until the very end!

i know you said no romance, but its not the regualr sex romance stuff. its called twilight by stephenie meyer. a gaurantee love.
from back of book----
About three things i was absloutely positive.
First edward was a vampire.
Second, there was a part of him- and i didn't know how dominant that part might be- that thirsted for my blood.
And third, i was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.
----a truly good book, hope you read it. not sappy but a true page turner.
