The term or name came from a spun rod bearing, causing the rod to become hot from lack of oil. A hot rod per say is a stripped down version of a car. People that started this trend used what ever parts they had on hand or could get in a junk or reaching yard.

A hot rod is a vehicle that has been modified to increase certain performance characteristics, usually spped and handling. The modifications include (but are not limited to) engine enhancements, suspension modifications, wheel and tire changes, and other refinements. The term is usually referred to pre-1949 automobiles (newer cars are usually named low riders, custom cars - or kustom cars, with a "k", or sometimes, custom rods) by sanctioing automotive organizations like SEMa, NSRA and others.

That is an old term used to describe a a stock car you fixed up to be loud and faster than it was from the factory. Bigger engine, loud dual exhaust, white letter tires.... all kinds of things you can do to a car.
