Which foods make the best finger foods?
Your baby may have a good appetite, but he probably doesn't have many teeth, so start with foods that he can gum or that will dissolve easily in his mouth. As he grows into a toddler, you'll be able to give him bite-size pieces of whatever you're eating.

Remember that your baby's learning about food's texture, color, and aroma as he feeds himself, so try to offer him a variety. The food should be easy to handle but not present a choking hazard. And be sure to choose food that's appropriate for his age.

Here's a list of finger food favorites:

• O-shaped toasted oat cereal or other low-sugar cereal

• Lightly toasted bread or bagels (spread with vegetable puree for extra vitamins)

• Small chunks of banana or other very ripe peeled and pitted fruit, like mango, plum, pear, peach, cantaloupe, or seedless watermelon

• Small cubes of tofu

• Well-cooked pasta spirals, cut into pieces

• Very small chunks of cheese

• Chopped hard-boiled egg (after 12 months)

• Cut-up raisins, softened dried apricots, or stewed prunes

• Small pieces of well-cooked vegetables, like carrots, peas, zucchini, potato, or sweet potato

• Small well-cooked broccoli or cauliflower "trees"

• Pea-size pieces of cooked chicken or other soft meat

• Rice cakes or crackers broken into small pieces

Vegetables and try to avoid anything with dairy in it at first. Introduce a bit of cheese keep a good check on him in case it gives him stomach pain or wind. yoghurt and cows milk are big causes of wind. I personally wouldn't give him any form of meat or processed fish due to the additives, hormones and antibiotics which are known to diminish the development of brain function in infants. Nut allergy doesn't usually kick in till teens but i wouldn't want to risk peanut butter. Salt content has to be taken into account. mark (proud father of a six month old with a well read mum)

Hi!

Nice soft bread finger butties!

Jelly made up, and then when set cut it up into cubes (a little messy - but he'll LOVE it!).

Lightly toasted bread fingers.

Bread and butter pudding cut into fingers or squares.

Cooked pasta spirals.

Grated cheese.

Boiled eggs - chopped.

Can't think of much else at the moment, but I hope these ideas help!

My son loved lightly cooked frozen mixed vegetables, i just cut the green beans into smaller pieces. It's good to get them into the vegetable habit early.

anything is OK as long as it is cut up enough .just keep an eye on him for the first few times as sometimes babies pretend to choke on food they are not used to but if this happens just have some juice ready for him to have to wash it down with
