-------------
Electric vehicles are safer, overall, that gas-powered vehicles. But it's a different technology, so it's normal that people would voice concerns.
*
Gasoline is a significant hazard - it is toxic, carcinogenic, and explosive. We have simply lived around it for so long that we have become accustomed to its risks.
*
Electricity is dangerous too - but the design of an electric vehicle keeps high voltages out of the passenger cabin - there is simply no reason to run high voltages there. So it is always safe to cut or pry people out of wrecked cars.
*
Direct current (the kind of electricity found in batteries) is also safer than alternating current (the kind that comes out of wall sockets.) Even if a rescuer cut into a live DC wire, the risk of shock is far lower than from a comparable AC wire.
*
In addition, every EV design comes with fuses or circuit breakers to cut current in an accident. It is much easier to stop the flow of electricity than it is to stop the flow of gasoline from a ruptured line.
*
There is also no more 'battery acid' present in new battery designs. New batteries designed for EV use are tested for safety by crushing and puncturing to simulate accident damage.

this is a question that is hard to answer. for the people in the car it is not really much different . for the rescue worker who are on trying to get you out if trapped this car can be deadly .
no real standard means of insuring the power is not on and is not some how making the car body a huge shock hazard for the workers is in place.
i know this because i have a brother who is a medic. he told me about this problem.

They are actually a little safer - no heat, no combustible fuels, no hot antifreeze...the list goes on. The only negative is that they carry lots of wet cell batteries - and these are full of sulfuric acid (just like all car batteries.)
