I have dish network 500 now and have extra older dish from direct tv.Want to know if I can set up direct tv dish and use my dish network receiver or do I have to buy a dish network dish?

The curved pie pan shaped “dish” isn’t the problem. The thingy that looks at the dish called an “LNB” is. Dish network and Direct TV’s LNB’s are proprietary.

Dish offers the Dish Movers Program. They provide a free dish professionally installed at your next residence encouraging customers to leave there dish behind – hoping the new residents will subscribe. This doesn’t exactly qualify – but its close. Worth a call.

A quick search on Ebay shows Dish 500’s going for less than $20

It’s much harder to install a Dish than you think - aiming a Dish at the proper satellites is not easy.

Recommend professional installation.
