Some of my favorites from when I was younger:
The Westing Game: A mystery that involves a murder, a game, and an inheritance will.
The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm: Very funny. Three detectives that try to find a consulates three children. Set in the future, but not really futuristic.
The Egypt Game: Four children create their own little Egypt in an abandoned lot, and odd things start happening.
None of these books are too long, and they are very, very good.

How old are the girls and is there a particular subject or genre that's popular?
Here are a few suggestions that might be of general interest:
Sold by Patricia McCormick (http://www.amazon.com/Sold-Patricia-McCormick/dp/0786851716/sr=1-1/qid=1171231487/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-0941067-6281515?ie=UTF8&s=books) - this was recommended to me by a friend who is a librarian, although I haven't read it yet.
Sorcery and Cecelia by Patricia C. Wrede and Carolyn Stevermer http://www.amazon.com/Sorcery-Cecelia-Enchanted-Chocolate-Correspondence/dp/015205300X/sr=1-1/qid=1171231529/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-0941067-6281515?ie=UTF8&s=books) is a fun read. It's fantasy but also has adventure, humor, mystery, action and romance. I really enjoyed it.
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card (http://www.amazon.com/Enders-Game-Ender-Book-1/dp/0812550706/sr=1-2/qid=1171231730/ref=pd_bbs_2/104-0941067-6281515?ie=UTF8&s=books) is a classic modern science fiction novel about a future where Earth is at war with aliens, and losing, and children are drafted and trained as soldiers. Great book and pretty easy reading.

Well, how about "Anne of Green Gables" by L.M. Montgomery. It's the first in a series of "Anne" books. Very poignant and a window into a world that doesnt exist anymore.

Depends on what type of book your into. But I just recentley read a good one, called Blindness by Jose Saramago. It was compelling, a fast read. But intense. It has a great individual/women stregth themes.
