The person that you know and interact with without considering them a friend is correct. There is also a familiarity with a subject, set of ideas or circumstance which you are familiar with because of experience. Like having some acquaintance with loneliness.

An aquaintance is someone you bumped into, a friend that isnt so close, like a best friend, it could be considered as someone you know, but dont know all that well.
