Polarization is a word used to define different ends of the spectrum politically.

It's like when an issue comes up for debate and one side is completely opposed but the other side is completely for it. You would say it is a polarized issue because both sides are adamant with their stances against and for it.

It's used to represent the fact the two sides are completely opposite... ie, the north and the south poles... losing the middle ground.

Polar opposites and no movement. It is actually bad for that to happen. A polarizing candidate means that there is no cross over appeal such as no republican will cross over vote and vis versa. Polarized basically means no compromise on the issues and that is bad for progress.

It means either that the parties are at opposite extremes from one another, or it means that within each party there are schisms. Right now, I'd say the latter is true, the former less so since November.

It is not a bad thing most of the time. It only means that both have principled positions they are not willing to flip flop on.

Majority rule wins.

It means that they are not willing to listen to opposing views and negotiate to reach a conclusion that is best for the country. It is "my way or the highway".
