That's an old superstition. If you give a knife, scissors, or other sharp object as a gift, the other person is supposed to make a token payment of a penny. That way, you won't "cut" the friendship. One brand of knives used to include a penny in the box with the knife so that you wouldn't cut off any future purchases.
A similar superstition involves putting a few pennies in a bank that you're giving as a gift. If you give an empty bank or purse, you're supposedly wishing poverty on the recipient.

A knife as a gift from a lover means that the love will soon end.
If a friend gives you a knife, you should give him a coin, or your friendship will soon be broken.
I do not know the origins but those are but two superstitions about knives.

I have heard that it is bad Feng Shui to give a knife as gift. However I have also read that giving a token coin to the giver of the knife will neutralize the ill affects

If you recieve a knife as a gift, you should immediately give the giver a penny, to keep the friendship intact. Giving a knife as a gift to someone that is unable to return a penny immediately is a message that you nolonger wish to be friends.

countless human beings ask for knives as area of their registry. In some cultures, it really is amazingly taboo to provide knives. although, I surely have realized, maximum youthful adults do not see it that way any extra. if you're uncomfortable giving knives, then supply them a present certificate for the price of the knives. Or, do what I surely have done, I supply them a penny earlier they open my present and practice them to 'purchase' the present from me for the penny. That way, they 'offered' the knives from you rather than receiving them.
