my betta has been with me for a few months now, and a few days ago i thought he was dead because he was lying on his side at the bottom of the tank. when i tapped the tank, he kind of jumped up and sped to the surface and started taking in loads of air. everytime he took in a bubble of air, the bubble would just come back out of his gills. now he just lies at the bottom with his fins spread out, and gulps at the water.

oh my God.. it is NOT ick.

sounds like poor water quality to me. he's probably not long for this world. do you have him in a typical betta set up? a bowl or vase? this is not the proper way to house a betta. if you have him in a proper tank already, congrats. and it is most likely not poor water quality then, if he is properly housed I would guess fish tuberculosis.

if you do have him in a bowl or vase and would like info on how to properly house them feel free to email me on yahoo at originalcatastrophequeen

The bubble are for a information superhighway tht th malesmake continuously, inspite of in the experience that they don't seem being the gill flaring is healthy. Bettas have a tendency to flare their gills also if their is yet another little aquatic nimal searching at it

its time to say good bye
if you want be humane- get a snack bag with some water in it and put the fish in it.
double bag it with two other plastic bags and put it in the freezer.
He will quickly go to sleep and die from freezing. Then he can go out with the trash on "trash day". Sorry for you lose. I love my fish as well.

Clean his bowl very well, before replacing him.
