Shouldn't the Pittsburgh Pirates change their name to Pittsburgh People? After-all who wants to live in a city of *theves*?

it's a team nickname, it's been around since the 1800s, there's no reason to change it

this is a really stupid question

The Pittsburg Pirates were one of the original teams of the National League, in 1887. Prior to that, they were a member of the American Association, which was also a major league, from 1882 - 1886, which was the lifespan of that league. From 1882 - 1890, they were called the Pittsburgh Alleghenys.

This is a storied franchise, and there is absolutely no reason for a name change of any type.

Nor is there a reason for the Cleveland Indians to change their team nickname. That franchise, in the early 20th century, had a number of name changes, some of which were a way of honouring their best players. That's why, for a period, they were known as the Cleveland Naps. for Napoleon Lajoie. They were renamed the Indians in honour of Louis Sockalexis, a full-blooded Penobscot Indian, who had been their best player the last time that the team was renamed.

The Atlanta Braves and the NFL's Washington Redskins, however, have no reason to retain their respective team nicknames.

Yes they should. Great point from a concerned citizen. Should they change the team name you would then no longer have a cause to rally against. How will you then fill all those lonely hours?

Haha. Then we should change the names of pretty much every other team in pro sports.
