Um, if you don't mind training them, a dog would be good. My dogs, now that they are trained, can go for eight hours without needing to go to the bathroom. You can feed a dog when you come back(and make sure the you give them plenty of love). Um, it isn't too expensive to take care of a dog, just make sure that you take good care to watch for fleas and ticks. Give a dog heartworm med. also. And rabies vacination. For the rest of the time it is normally inexpensive.

a ferret, gieunea pigs, or a cat. it would seem that you would need something that could stay comfortably in a cage all day, be litter trained if it had free roam, and not destroy your house while you are gone.
anything that needs to relieve its self outside might be a bad idea, especially if its young and you want an indoor pet. If you don't want accidents, then don't go that route.
If you want a cat and don't mind spending some money look into Begals. They're a larger sized cat and love to play. Plus they're really beautiful and have amazing colors.
i dont like ferrets but they would make a really great indoor pet. they dont stink if you get them after they've had all their glands removed. they can have an attitude of an eternal kitten.
Guinea pigs are pretty cool. i have an albino and a chesnut. they are quirky little things, but can be smelly.

I don't like snakes that much, and I HATE spiders, too! I would get a gerbil. They are not expensive, all you have to do is buy bedding, a bag of food (At your local pet store) get a water bottle, and a 'house'. You can give thenm toys such as papertowel rolls, and things. AND you don't HAVE to pay attention to them, unless you WANT to. http://www.twinsqueaks.com is a great site.

Cats are pretty low maintenance. They don't mind sleeping or entertaining themselves for 8 hours while you are gone. They don't need to be walked. They will eat and drink when they are hungry and thirsty. And they are soft and cuddly when you come home, and they like to play.

You should get a ferret. They are cute small but not too small and fun to be with. They can also entertain themselves for long periods of time.

A kitten. You can leave them alone alot. But they are always ready to be cuddled when you are. They are easy to litter train so you don't have to take them outside at all.
