Probably. My parents used to cut out squares of regular old paper, write a letter of the alphabet on each square (including the 'yes', 'no' and the numbers as well), then laid them out in the shape of a circle on a table. Then they would use a crystal wine glass turned upside down for the planchette and rest their fingertips on the bottom of the stem. They were using it one night and something happened that scared them so bad they never did it again. They never would tell us what, either. My thought is if you believe it works, then it will work. My brother has taken several classes regarding the bible, occult, religion as well as theology, and he warned me not to mess around with the spirit world. He said you can let something in that won't go back, you just never know what's on the other side of that board or watching you sleep from the end of your bed. I know that all sounds like religious mumbo crap, but I am not the least bit religious like that. Jeez . . . I ramble. To answer your question, yes.

yes they work, and usually better because it's something you made and put your energy into by making it. but as w/ ANY ouija board u must be careful!! be sure u know exactly what you are doing or have someone experienced with you, it may be sold in the same isle but it is definitly not a toy. and never do ouija alone.

In building a homemade one you would be able to channel the forces surrounding it easier, if you believe in that sort of thing.
Be careful
