I personally use both Similac Advance and Enfamil Lipil on my son. Usually the hospital will give you a brand (either Similac or Enfamil) to try and just watch the baby from there to make sure the formula agrees with him. Also, go to both formula companies websites and sign up and they will send you free samples and checks toward formula. It is a great bonus :)

Most of these formaulas have the same composition. I use Enfamil. Try to find one with Iron-for brain development and DHA and ARA for sensory development. The hard part is figuring out what your infant can tolerate. You can start with the original iron based formula usually this is hard on a baby's stomach. In the hospitol they will usually try them on Similac with iron if he spits it up then they might switch to soy suggest a formula with milk proteins that are more broken down or easy to digest like Good Start those formulas are closer to breastmilk. May i suggest though that your wife breastfeed the first two to three days so the baby can get the colostrum ( it is a yellowish substance that comes out before the milk lets down) it is packed with antibodies that help boost the infants immune system it is very good for the baby. My ob says if you can't breastfeed and you do that then it give the baby a good start in life. Good luck I hope you find what works for you soon so you don't have to play around too much with the formula it's very hard on their digestive systems. When you find one go to the website and sign up for their coupons they save a lot of money!

I used Enfamil Lipil w/ Iron. These days, though, it pays to take the time and compare all the baby formulas; we've noticed there isn't much difference between the general ingredient content of the higher-end formulas and comparable generic formulas.

You can ask your hospital for samples (you should have received some when you left the hospital) and try those out first. If your baby doesn't have a problem with those formulas, shop around and find one that is comparable and will fit into your life financially.

Enfimil and Similac are both very food brands, try to talk your wife into at least pumping her milk even for a few weeks, your baby really needs the antibodies etc.If you then still go to formula it is always a good idea to start with a lactose free or soy, this is of course my opinion but it will just lessen the chance of having to deal with a gassy or colicky baby due to a dairy allergy or lactose intolerant.

All formula sold in the US has to meet the same standards, so it's just finding one that will be best for your baby, there is no one that is "healthier" than another. Except make sure that you use one that has DHA and ARA added to it, which are nutrients that are found in breast milk and help with eye and brain development.

Ask your pediatrician which one they recommend for your baby. Similac and Enfimil brands make various ones for different situations. For example, soy, hypo-allergenic, thickened, preemie, partially broken down proteins, are different varieties of their formula.

When changing formula's to find the one that is best for your baby, do so slowly. Don't just go from always giving one formula to always giving a different formula. And I found that it took about a week on each formula to see how exactly he did on it.

Also call each formula company and ask for free samples and get on their mailing list for coupons.

Good luck and congrats on your new baby!

My son uses GoodStart with ARA and DHA (when he's not breastfed)

Nestle's Good Start Supreme is the only formula that my baby will eat. She's had only breastmilk for the first 3 moths of her life but I'm getting ready to go back to work and had to start supplementing one or two bottles a day with formula. The other two brands we tried (Similac and Enfamil) she spit out and absolutely refused to eat. I don't blame her, they smelled awful. The Nestle's Good Start doesn't smell nearly as bad as the other ones. It smells almost a little sweet, kinda like breastmilk. It seems like it's easy to digest and sits well with her too.

the best brand of formula is what your child will be able to tolorate. every babys tummy is different. we tried a few in conjunction with breast milk with my daughter and certain ones she did not tollorate at all.. or it consipated her something horrid and made her very upset. I wanted to breast feed with her 100% but she is a preemie and needed a extra formula for weight gain.

has she considered maybe pumping breast milk and bottle feeding that way? because it is ultimatly the best for the baby and breaks down in the tummy very easy.

nestle has a gental formula, and similac has good formulas for all kinds of needs. the best thing to do is talk to your peds dr and ask him/her about what your child needs to grow and become strong.

I used Enfamil with iron at first, but it seemed too clumpy. I switched to the creamier generic brand at my Publix grocery store, and my baby did MUCH better on it. She had fewer spit-ups and wet burps, and it was creamier, not clumpy. I'm still using it 10 months later.

You should get recommendations from your pediatrician. They'll probably even give you some free samples.

Good luck and congrats!

We use Enfamil Lipil with iron and my son hasn't had any problems with it and I like it. Pretty sad that people can't just answer the question without giving you grief over not breastfeeding. Formula is perfectly fine or it wouldn't be a alternative.....
