Anime is the animated cartoon form. You want "manga," the comic book form. Most anime are just animated versions of manga.

There's a great series of books that tells you how to be good manga artist. They explain how to draw bodies, faces, clothes, backgrounds, perspective, tones, layouts, etc.

The first few books in these results belong to this series:
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/002-4402023-3572801?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=how+to+draw+manga&Go.x=0&Go.y=0&Go=Go

You'll see that different books focus on different things, like bodies, character design, etc. They're a pretty decent introduction for people who haven't taken any art, and can substitute for actual art instruction books.

I would definitely recommend this one to you, since you probably want to draw characters: http://www.amazon.com/How-Draw-Manga-Bodies-Anatomy/dp/4766112385/sr=8-3/qid=1171235057/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3/002-4402023-3572801?ie=UTF8&s=books
This introduction to drawing bodies can be extended to all styles; they give great advice on visualizing space and the angle of the head and stuff. Um, there might be a second one focusing on heads and faces.

You can probably get them from your local library through Interloan. I know it's not as fast as going to a special site on the internet, but there is no one site that is as good as these books. It's really more convenient in the long run to just borrow them from the library. Also, I always think a well-designed book is much more satisfying to hold and study than a website-- it feels easier to be able to turn and bookmark the pages of a physical book. You'll be able to sit with it an a sketchbook and practice the techniques.

Note that the first few things you draw will really suck, but keep practicing and you will be surprised at how quickly you improve!!!

Hi, I draw manga (not anime, but it's a common mistake, don't worry). I'd like to say that, first off, you have a rather cute manga style from what I can tell. I wish I could go into more detail, but the photograph is rather blurry, and in bad lighting. I feel that I should point out some anatomy mistakes, if you don't mind. You did ask for the opinion of someone who drew in this style. Her eyes are a little skewed, off-centre, and don't leave much room for whites. The lack of whites is fine in your style, but you might want to invest in going back to basics with very simple guidelines to get the eyes to sit right. Her nose is either too small, or in the wrong style. A common mistake with manga is that noses look the same from both 3/4 and frontal angles, but this is a mistake. Try getting rid of that line that comes up from the tip, and see if that looks better. Even a simple stylised dot in this particular style will look good, and rather cute. Her mouth appears to be rather far down, and the smile is very small, giving her a 'fake' appearance. Try eradicate this by stretching the sides wider, and higher. Her shoulders and bust are not proportionally accurate to her hips. If she has large breasts, she will need large hips to support them, and she will certainly look like she has had plastic surgery if she does not. Her shoulders are too wide in proportion to her hips, as they should be roughly the same width. I think that you should study the proportions of real people around you, if you want to improve. A common problem with novice manga artists is that they do not study poses and proportions of people around them, which most advanced manga artists do, and this can often make their pictures look less visually appealing. My advice to you is to learn more about the facial structures of people, and maybe read up on a few manga you think look a bit like your style, or what you want your style to be, to see how the official manga artists draw.

You can't draw anime. Anime is animated, manga is the comic book format. If you want so badly to draw manga, read a lot of it and watch lots of anime, and study it. There are lots of books called How To Draw Manga that you can pick up maybe at your library, and if not, go to a bookstore and shell out some money. If you don't want to pay the money, then you're probably not determined enough to call yourself an artist.

I suggest doing something -different- and developing your own style, but I guess most people don't care about being original anymore....

The ONLY way to learn to draw is practice and study.
there is no "10 steps to being a fantastic artist" that will have you drawing wonderful pictures by the end of the day.
Practice practice practice. Study gesture, line, lighting, composition, anatomy, perspective, learn how to site and measure learn color theory, how tones work, warm and cool, then start looking into anime stylization and techniques and you should have something.
