I work at a hospital as a phlebotomist, and just recently I was called upon by one of the doctors to translate (from Spanish to Englih) for a patient in the critical care unit. They're keeping the patient in isolation and the doctor asked me to put on latex gloves, a surgical mask and a surgical robe before entering the patient's room. As it turns out, the patient has tuberculosis, which keeps reccuring due to an immunity to the medications that they've been giving him. The doctor had me tell the patient that he needs to try and cough up some phlem and analize the sample so they're better able to understand how advanced his case is. The patient wasn't too keen on the idea of coughing up phlem and put all sorts of excuses. The doctor then told him that the sample was needed or not the doctor would have to remove samples from his nasal passages himself. The doctor also told him that treatment is absolutely neccesary, or not the patient will not be released into public.

The patient then asked what will happen after he was better. I was a bit confused as to why he asked this question. And the doctor told me to tell him that since he was in this country illegaly that the authorities were coming to pick him up and have him transported back to Mexico. The reason I'm asking if I should be ashamed is because I'm a Hispanic-American and work as a phlebotomist and see many cases of patients with tuberculosis who happen to be Mexican. In a sense I felt bad that I was actually glad that this illegal alien was being transported back to Mexico.
