Not only Al Gore but his father were long time U.S. Senators from Tennessee, and Al Gore who ran for president also served in Vietnam as a war journalist. The bible thumpers in the south were still upset over Prez Clinton's secret affair with Monica Lewisky and took out there anger on Gore.

Living in Tennessee for the last 30 years gave me just enough insight into how Al Gore operated that I could not vote for him.
He was raised mainly in Washington and his core beliefs do not match what most Tennesseeans believe in.
But, his biggest mistake was how he only used his Tennessee roots at election time. He thought he could just throw on a flannel shirt and try to talk country and we would really think he was just a good old farm boy that's done good. We may be southern, bare foot, and in-bred, but we are not that stupid.

Gun control and free speech. Tennessee is a heavily rural state with a lot of hunters and the Brady Bill effected several directly. he was seen as stepping on the second ammendment. Also his wife Tipper was pushing on censorship of rap and rock and roll albums. He was viewed as wanting to stem free speech, both together made him unpopular in Tn. Also he had not lived in Tn for years and years so he was no longer looked at as a native.
That is it in a nut shell, both issues ran deep here and quite honestly probably hurt him over all in the nation.

Because he ran a horrible campaign, and because Tennessee was increasingly Republican in the 1990s while Gore was taking it for granted (as he himself has admitted).
LEOGIRL - Edwards wasn't voted out. He chose to run for President (then VP) instead. He never stood for reelection to the Senate.

Because with all the Clinton BS going on we lost faith in his ability to stand up and be counted on not to mention who wants a first lady who has a name like Tipper it always sounds like someone calling their pet "HERE TIPPER TIPPER TIPPER"

I suspect that they knew something the rest didn't. Just as Edwards was voted out after only one term. Pay attention.

It certainly was not because he looked after their interests. Besides, they knew he really didn't invent the internet.
