I am moving to Indianapolis in a couple of months and I am starting law school in the fall. My husband and I are hoping to find a good, affordable place to live. I want two bedrooms, but I only really need one. We really want washer and dryer hookups in our apartment and some extra room (our furniture is huge). We don't need extra stuff like a pool, exercise room, etc. We want it to be quiet, maybe a duplex as opposed to a big complex (but a good complex would be fine, too). I don't want to spend more than $600/month.

I lived in a few different apartments before we built our house. You could try Meridian Lakes -- which has a central location near Broad Ripple - and is a great commute downtown...or go to the north side of Indy. Autumn Woods is older, but I loved the layouts and it was affordable. I also felt safe there. It is on Allisonville, just south of 96th Street. Also, we last lived in Wellington Place in Fishers - off 96th and Lantern. Loved it there. We had a 2 bd, 2 bath - and I believe it was around $800/month. It is a bit more upscale, but they also have townhomes. Good luck!

If he will be going to school on the IUPUI campus, you can check out Lockfield Gardens. They have a variety of floor plans and I think some actually come with the washer and dryer already installed. There are also some communities nearby, about a 10-15 minute drive away in Speedway. The Sexton Companies have several - Sebring Court, Stanford Court and Darby Court, all within close proximity to each other. TIf I remember correctly, they all come with a washer and dryer. There are some new complexes in that area as well and it is close to shopping, downtown and is a nice place to live. Also, see if you can get a rental guide for the area to narrow down the places you'd like to investigate further.

Rent.com actually has some decent listings in Indianapolis. My advice would be to stay away from the West side of town. The better neighborhoods are to the north, north east.

Deerbrook Apartments on Allisonville and 96th...Stay on the north/northeast side...And steer clear of Amli...They have about 4 or 5 complexes and they are evil...

Many people are not aware of it, but real estate agencies handle rentals as well as home sales. Suggest you contact an agency in Indianapolis. They are familiar with neighborhoods and rents, so you won't be "flying blind".
